What is the CIBIL MSME Rank?
The CIBIL MSME Rank, or CMR, is a rank that TransUnion CIBIL gives to a business, not to a person. CIBIL is TransUnion CIBIL, the oldest of India's credit bureaus. A credit bureau collects repayment records from lenders and turns them into reports.
CMR is short for CIBIL MSME Rank. It runs from 1 to 10. CMR-1 goes to the least risky business and CMR-10 to the most risky (TransUnion CIBIL). The rank estimates the chance that the business becomes a non-performing asset in the next 12 months (TransUnion CIBIL). A loan becomes non-performing when interest or principal stays overdue for more than 90 days (RBI Master Circular on asset classification).
The rank sits inside the business's commercial CIBIL report, which TransUnion CIBIL calls the Company Credit Report. "Commercial CIBIL" is the everyday name people use for this report and rank.
What each CIBIL MSME Rank means
TransUnion CIBIL publishes the direction of the scale, not a fixed meaning for each step. The bands below follow that direction.
| Rank | What it signals | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CMR-1 | Least risky profile | TransUnion CIBIL |
| CMR-2 to CMR-3 | Low risk | TransUnion CIBIL |
| CMR-4 to CMR-6 | Moderate risk; more lender questions | TransUnion CIBIL |
| CMR-7 to CMR-9 | Higher risk; fewer lenders, higher cost | TransUnion CIBIL |
| CMR-10 | Most risky profile | TransUnion CIBIL |
Many businesses that watch their own report sit at the safer end. Among entities that check their own commercial report, 47% hold a rank between 1 and 3 (TransUnion CIBIL).
A business with a very short credit history may have no rank yet. When TransUnion CIBIL extended CMR in 2020, it said it would also cover entities with total credit exposure below ₹10,00,000 (TransUnion CIBIL). A business with no business loans at all may still show as unranked.
Consumer CIBIL versus commercial CIBIL
| Consumer CIBIL | Commercial CIBIL | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it covers | A person: the owner, a partner, a director | The business as a borrower | TransUnion CIBIL, TransUnion CIBIL |
| Number | CIBIL score, 300 to 900, higher is better | CIBIL MSME Rank, 1 to 10, lower is better | TransUnion CIBIL, TransUnion CIBIL |
| Report name | CIBIL score and report | Company Credit Report | TransUnion CIBIL |
| Free copy | One free full report a year for individuals | No free annual right stated in the rule | RBI notification, 01-Sep-2016 |
For a business loan, lenders usually read both. A partnership or company with a strong rank but a director with a poor personal score is still a harder case. Read more in CIBIL score for a business loan.
How lenders use the CIBIL MSME Rank
Most lenders do not publish a minimum CMR. Some publish how it moves the price. Bank of Baroda sets the interest spread on MSME loans above ₹25,00,000 and up to ₹7,50,00,000 by CMR and by how much hard security covers the loan (Bank of Baroda). Its published price ranges show the effect plainly:
| Bank of Baroda price range by rank (loans above ₹25,00,000 to ₹7,50,00,000) | Spread over its repo-linked lending rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CMR-1 | 0.30% to 1.75% | Bank of Baroda |
| CMR-2 | Strategic premium plus 0.60% to 2.40% | Bank of Baroda |
| CMR-3 | Strategic premium plus 0.65% to 3.70% | Bank of Baroda |
| CMR-4 | Strategic premium plus 1.00% to 5.85% | Bank of Baroda |
| CMR-5 | Strategic premium plus 1.65% to 7.25% | Bank of Baroda |
| CMR-6 | Strategic premium plus 2.20% to 7.45% | Bank of Baroda |
Bank of Baroda's repo-linked lending rate for MSME loans was 7.90% from 06-Dec-2025, with a strategic premium of 0.25% (Bank of Baroda). The table tells you two things. A better rank costs less. And a weaker rank is priced, not refused: in a separate table for fully secured loans to micro enterprises, the bank still lists a price for CMR-7 and below, and a price for unrated businesses (Bank of Baroda).
Public sector banks also pull commercial and consumer bureau reports automatically through their digital credit assessment model (PIB press release). So the rank is read even on fast online loan journeys.
An example: two firms with the same turnover
Take two trading firms. Each sells about the same amount every year and each has a working capital limit and a vehicle loan.
The first firm pays every instalment by the due date. Its cash credit account stays inside its limit, even in the slow months. When it repaid an old equipment loan, it collected the closure letter and checked that the report showed the loan as closed.
The second firm is just as profitable on paper. But its cash credit account runs over the limit for a few weeks most quarters, and two instalments were paid late during a slow season. An old loan it repaid still shows as open on its report, because nobody asked the lender to update it.
The second firm will usually carry a weaker rank than the first, even though the two businesses earn the same. A lender reading both files sees one firm that manages its credit and one that strains against it. Most of the gap is fixable: keep the account inside its limit, pay on the date, and clean up the old record. None of it needs more sales.
How to check your CIBIL MSME Rank
- Go to cibil.com and find the Company Credit Report for businesses.
- Choose a plan. The report is sold by TransUnion CIBIL on its website; plan names and prices change, so check the site (TransUnion CIBIL).
- Enter the business details: the business name, PAN and registered address, and the person applying on its behalf.
- Verify your authority. The bureau checks that you are allowed to see the business's report.
- Read the rank and every account under it. Check loan amounts, overdue figures, account status and the list of lenders.
More businesses now check their own report. The number of commercial entities checking their Company Credit Report for the first time grew 12% year on year in FY2023-24 (TransUnion CIBIL).
How to improve your CIBIL MSME Rank
Lenders report data to bureaus every fortnight, as on the 15th and the last day of each month (RBI Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025). Clean behaviour starts to show within weeks, but a rank moves meaningfully over months.
| Action | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Pay every business loan instalment on time | Repayment conduct is the core of the rank |
| Clear overdue amounts on any facility | Overdues are the strongest warning sign |
| Keep cash credit and overdraft use inside the limit | Overdrawn accounts read as stress |
| Avoid many new loan requests in a short time | Clusters of enquiries suggest a cash squeeze |
| Close facilities you no longer use, properly | A clean closure is better than a dormant line |
| Correct wrong entries | An error can hold the rank down unfairly |
Fixing an error on your commercial report
Raise a dispute with TransUnion CIBIL from its website, or ask the lender that reported the wrong entry to correct it. If a lender refuses a correction, it must tell you why (RBI Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025). If a complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, the RBI rules provide compensation of ₹100 per day of delay (RBI Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025). Keep copies of loan closure letters and no-dues certificates. They are your strongest evidence.
Common mistakes
- Watching only the owner's score. For a firm or a company, the business rank is read separately.
- Letting a small overdraft overrun linger. It shows as an overdue, even if the amount is small.
- Not closing settled or repaid loans on record. Ask the lender for a closure letter and check the report afterwards.
- Assuming no rank is a bad rank. Being unrated is not the same as being risky.

Frequently asked questions
CMR stands for CIBIL MSME Rank. It is TransUnion CIBIL's rank for a business as a borrower, from 1 to 10 (TransUnion CIBIL).
CMR-1 is the strongest rank. It goes to the least risky business. CMR-10 is the most risky (TransUnion CIBIL).
It sits in the middle of the scale: riskier than CMR-1 to CMR-3, safer than CMR-7 and above. Lenders still lend at CMR-4, but often at a higher rate. Bank of Baroda's published spread for CMR-4 is wider than for CMR-1 (Bank of Baroda).
It is near the risky end. Fewer lenders will lend without strong security, and the price is higher. Check the report for overdues or wrong entries driving it.
Most lenders do not publish a cut-off. Some price by rank instead. Bank of Baroda's published tables price loans from CMR-1 through CMR-7 and below, and for unrated businesses (Bank of Baroda).
