Bill discounting and invoice discounting for businesses
Bill discounting lets a business get cash against an invoice its buyer has accepted, instead of waiting for the due date. A lender advances part of the invoice and collects from the buyer. On TReDS, the RBI-authorised platform for MSME receivables, the discounting is without recourse to the seller. It suits a business that sells on credit to other businesses.

Capnix is not a lender and never buys or funds invoices itself. Lenders on our lender panel decide approval, advance and charge. We read your receivables and trading pattern, share your file with lenders on our panel only after you give consent, and run the lender application. Getting your loan through us costs you nothing.

How bill discounting works, step by step
The steps are the same for most lenders, though advance shares and charges differ.
- You raise an invoice for goods or services delivered.
- Your buyer accepts the invoice.
- A lender advances a share of the invoice amount to you.
- On the due date, the buyer pays the lender.
- The lender passes you the balance, after its discount charge and fees.
Invoice discounting on TReDS
TReDS is the route built for small sellers with large buyers. The rows below set out how it works.
| Point | What applies | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes part | Only micro, small and medium enterprises sell. Companies, government departments and public sector firms, and any other entity, can buy. Banks, NBFC-Factors and other permitted institutions finance. | RBI FAQ on TReDS Checked 02-Oct-2026 |
| Risk if the buyer defaults | Without recourse to the seller. | RBI FAQ on TReDS Checked 02-Oct-2026 |

| Udyam portal list | The Udyam portal still names four platforms and leaves out C2treds. | Udyam Registration portal Checked 02-Oct-2026 |
| Budget 2026-27 | Measures announced include TReDS for purchases from micro and small enterprises by central public sector firms, a CGTMSE guarantee for discounting, and links with the GeM marketplace. | Union Budget speech 2026-27 Checked 02-Oct-2026 |
Your rights if a buyer pays late
A buyer must pay a micro or small supplier within the agreed period, and at most 45 days from acceptance. If it does not, it owes compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, with monthly rests.
A dispute goes to the state MSE Facilitation Council through the MSME Samadhaan portal. Any micro or small enterprise with a valid Udyam registration can file. A receivable with this protection is easier for a lender to fund.

Bill discounting, factoring or a working capital loan?
The rows below describe usual practice, not rules. Each provider sets its own terms.
| Item | Bill discounting | Factoring | Working capital loan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funding is tied to | An accepted invoice | A bundle of receivables assigned to the factor | Your turnover and cash flow |
| Who collects from the buyer | The lender, or you under the contract | The factor | You |
| Buyer involved | Yes, accepts the invoice | Yes, is told of the assignment | No |
| Best for | B2B sellers with strong buyers | Sellers who want collection handled | General operating gaps |
Costs to expect
| Charge | What to expect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Discount charge | Interest for the days between funding and the due date, set by the lender or by bids on the platform. | |
| Penal charges | A penalty is a penal charge, not extra interest, and it cannot be added to earn more interest. |
RBI penal charges circular, 18-Aug-2023 Checked 02-Oct-2026 |
| Anything else | A fee that is not in the Key Facts Statement cannot be charged unless you have explicitly agreed to it. |

Worked example: a ₹5,00,000 invoice due in 60 days
A business holds an invoice of ₹5,00,000 that its buyer has accepted and that falls due in 60 days. The example discount rate is 10.5% a year, the top of the range one public sector bank publishes for micro enterprise loans up to ₹25,00,000. Your lender sets the rate and the advance share.
| Item | On the invoice amount |
|---|---|
| Amount interest is charged on | ₹5,00,000 |
| Interest for 60 days at 10.5% a year | ₹8,630 |
Discount charge = invoice amount x rate x days / 365. Processing fees and taxes are extra, and the lender may advance less than the full invoice.

Who it suits and who it does not
A strong fit if
- You sell on credit to other businesses
- Long receivable cycles strain your cash flow
- Your buyers are strong and accept invoices on time
Not a fit if
- You sell for cash to consumers (see merchant cash advance and POS-based loans)
- Your buyers dispute invoices often
Documents lenders usually ask for
The exact list depends on the lender or platform. Most start from the records below.
- Invoices accepted by the buyer, and the purchase orders behind them
- Buyer details and your history of trading with the buyer
- GST returns and bank statements for the last 6 to 12 months
- Udyam certificate, which you need to sell on TReDS
- Identity and address proof of the business and its promoters

Business loan documents checklistHow Capnix fits
- Start with your free Capnix score. It reads GST filing and banking records, the proof a receivables lender checks beside your invoices.
- Buyer and invoice details reach a lender only after you give consent, and you can withdraw that consent in your Capnix account.
- Capnix earns a fee from the lender after disbursal, never from your invoice.
