Udyam registration: what it is, who needs it and why lenders ask for it

Udyam registration is the government's free, online, self-declared registration that records a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise. It gives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate. Banks use that certificate to classify a business, which decides whether MSME rules such as collateral-free limits and credit guarantees apply.

Loan products, rates, and eligibility are determined by the lenders on our panel. Capnix is not a lender and does not lend its own capital. We run your loan journey end to end.

What Udyam registration is

Udyam registration is how a business tells the Ministry of MSME that it is a micro, small or medium enterprise. You fill one online form on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, and declare your details yourself. The portal then reads your investment and turnover from your PAN and GST records and places you in a category (Udyam Registration portal).

When the form is done, two things come back. You get a permanent Udyam Registration Number, and you get an e-certificate called the Udyam Registration Certificate (Udyam gazette notification). The certificate carries a dynamic QR code that opens your enterprise's page on the portal, and it never needs renewal (Udyam Registration portal).

Udyam replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM). If you still hold a UAM number, read Udyam vs Udyog Aadhaar before you do anything else.

Who can do Udyam registration

Any business that makes goods or provides services can register. Retail and wholesale traders can register too, but their benefit is limited to priority sector lending (Udyam Registration portal document). The category depends on two limits, investment and turnover, and the MSME classification page explains them in full.

Whose details go on the form depends on how the business is set up.

Business type Aadhaar of PAN GSTIN (the 15-character GST number) Source
Proprietorship The proprietor Proprietor's PAN can be used if the business has no other registration Only if the GST law requires one Udyam gazette notification, Udyam Registration portal document
Partnership firm The managing partner Firm's PAN, mandatory Only if the GST law requires one Udyam gazette notification, Udyam Registration portal document

Company, LLP, co-operative society, society or trust The authorised signatory Organisation's PAN, mandatory Organisation's GSTIN, where applicable Udyam gazette notification, Udyam Registration portal document

One business files one registration only. If it does several things, such as making and selling, all activities go into the same registration (Udyam gazette notification).

Is Udyam registration free?

Yes. The government notification says there is no fee for filing, and the portal says no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone (Udyam gazette notification). The portal also warns that it is the only official site, and that only it and the government's single window systems may register a business (Udyam Registration portal).

Some private websites look like the portal and charge for "registration" or "certificate" services. You do not need them. If you want help, the District Industries Centre (DIC) in your district and the Ministry's Champions Control Rooms help for free (Udyam gazette notification). The fees and updates page covers corrections and changes too.

How Udyam registration online works on the official portal

Capnix does not register businesses. The steps below happen on the government portal, by you.

  1. Open udyamregistration.gov.in and choose "New Registration". Choose "UAM Migration to Udyam" instead if you hold an old UAM number (Udyam Registration portal).
  2. Enter the Aadhaar number of the right person from the table above, and complete the Aadhaar check the portal asks for.
  3. Enter the business PAN. The portal fetches PAN and GST details from government records (Udyam Registration portal).
  4. Fill the business details: name, type, address, bank account, activity and employees. You upload no documents (Udyam Registration portal).
  5. Submit. The portal issues your Udyam Registration Number, and the certificate follows online (Udyam gazette notification).

The documents page lists what to keep beside you while you fill the form.

How to find your Udyam registration number

Your number is printed on your certificate. If you have lost both, the portal's "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" option helps you recover it, and "Verify Udyam Registration" confirms a number is real (Udyam Registration portal). The certificate is also available in DigiLocker, and the Ministry has asked departments and banks to accept that copy as equal to the printed one (Udyam Registration portal document). The Udyam certificate page walks through printing and verifying.

Why lenders ask for Udyam registration

A lender cannot treat you as a micro or small enterprise on your word. For priority sector lending, banks follow the category recorded in the Udyam Registration Certificate (RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector). That one line decides which rules apply to your loan.

What the certificate unlocks at a bank The rule Source
Priority sector status All bank loans to MSMEs qualify as priority sector lending RBI priority sector lending Directions, 2025
No collateral on small loans Banks must not take collateral on micro and small enterprise loans up to ₹20,00,000, for loans sanctioned (formally approved) or renewed from 01-Apr-2026; up to ₹25,00,000 for units with a good track record, at the bank's discretion RBI notification, 09-Feb-2026
A decision deadline Banks decide on micro and small enterprise loans up to ₹25,00,000 within 14 working days RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector
Credit guarantee cover CGTMSE covers loans to micro and small enterprises given without collateral CGTMSE scheme document

None of this makes a loan certain. Each lender still checks your banking, your returns and your repayment record, and decides for itself. What the certificate does is put your business in the right category before that check begins. The benefits page lists every benefit with its condition.

MSME registration benefits The main MSME registration benefits come from being recognised as a micro or small enterprise through Udyam. Banks must not take collateral on such loans up to ₹20,00,000, CGTMSE can guarantee them, and banks must decide within 14 working days on loans up to ₹25,00,000. Buyers must also pay micro and small suppliers within 45 days. MSME classification MSME classification sorts a business into micro, small or medium by two tests: investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and turnover. Since 01-Apr-2025 a micro enterprise has investment up to ₹2,50,00,000 and turnover up to ₹10,00,00,000. Crossing either limit moves a business up, and export turnover is not counted. The MSME 45-day payment rule Under section 15 of the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a micro or small supplier by the date agreed in writing, and never later than 45 days from accepting the goods or services. With no written agreement, the limit is 15 days. Late payment carries compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and under section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act a buyer can deduct a late-paid amount only when it is actually paid. Udyam certificate A Udyam certificate, formally the Udyam Registration Certificate (URC), is the free e-certificate the Ministry of MSME issues when a business completes Udyam registration. It carries a permanent registration number and a dynamic QR code, never needs renewal, and can be printed from udyamregistration.gov.in or opened in DigiLocker. MSME registration documents There are no MSME registration documents to upload. Udyam registration is paperless and self-declared: you need an Aadhaar number, the business PAN, and a GSTIN only where the GST law requires one. Investment and turnover are read from your PAN and GST records. Keep a few details ready so the form matches your other records. MSME registration fees There are no MSME registration fees. The government notification says no fee is charged for Udyam registration, and the official portal says no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone. Printing the certificate and updating your details are options on the same free portal, and the registration never needs renewal. Udyam udyog registration Udyam udyog registration today means Udyam, which replaced Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) as India's MSME registration from 01-Jul-2020. UAM registrations stayed valid only up to 30-Jun-2022, so any business still holding a UAM number must move to Udyam. Migration is free on udyamregistration.gov.in through the "UAM Migration to Udyam" option, and the result is a permanent Udyam number.
