Working capital loan for your business: how it works, what it costs, who it suits

A working capital loan is short-term business funding that pays for day-to-day operations, such as stock, salaries and the gap between paying suppliers and collecting from customers. Lenders often size it as a share of projected turnover: for micro and small enterprises with limits up to ₹5,00,00,000, at least 20% of it under the turnover method. It suits a business with steady sales and uneven cash timing.

How a working capital loan works

Working capital is the money a business needs to run from one sale to the next. It pays for stock, salaries, rent and the gap between paying suppliers and collecting from customers.

A lender can give it in three forms. A working capital term loan is paid out once and repaid in instalments. A cash credit or overdraft limit lets you draw and repay as cash moves. A revolving line of credit works the same way, with interest on the amount drawn.

How much working capital a lender will usually consider

Many lenders start from your projected annual turnover. For micro and small enterprise borrowers with limits up to ₹5,00,00,000, the limit is computed as at least 20% of that turnover. This is how lenders usually calculate it, and each lender adds its own checks.

For example, a projected turnover of ₹1,00,00,000 gives a limit of at least ₹20,00,000 under this method.

Do you need collateral?

From 01-Apr-2026, a bank may not accept collateral on a loan of up to ₹20,00,000 to a micro or small enterprise, whether new or renewed. That rule covers banks and these enterprises only.

Above that amount, a lender may ask for security over stock and receivables, or take a CGTMSE guarantee for working capital. You do not apply to CGTMSE yourself: the lender applies for cover after it sanctions the loan, and the cover for working capital runs in blocks of five years.

Worked example: ₹10,00,000 over 24 or 36 months

A business takes a working capital term loan of ₹10,00,000 at 10.5% a year. That is the top of the range one public sector bank publishes for micro enterprise loans up to ₹25,00,000. It is an example, not an offer. Your rate is set by the lender.

Item 24 months 36 months
Loan amount ₹10,00,000 ₹10,00,000
Monthly instalment ₹46,376 ₹32,502
Total interest ₹1,13,025 ₹1,70,088
Total repaid ₹11,13,025 ₹11,70,088

Monthly instalment = P x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n minus 1), where r is the monthly rate and n the number of months. Fees are not included.

Who it suits and who it does not

A strong fit if

  • Your sales are steady but cash arrives unevenly
  • You need to cover a short-term gap, not a long project
  • You can show regular banking and GST activity
Talk to our team

Not a fit if

  • You want to buy a machine or other long-life asset (see equipment financing or a term loan)
  • You want to cover losses rather than a timing gap in cash

Documents lenders usually ask for

One bank's own guide lists the records below. Another lender may ask for more or less.

  • Bank statements for the last 6 to 12 months
  • GST returns for the last 6 to 12 months
  • Income tax returns for 1 to 3 years
  • Balance sheet and profit and loss statement for 1 to 3 years
  • Business proof, such as a GST certificate, Udyam certificate or shop and establishment licence
  • KYC of the business and its promoters
  • A current stock statement, if the limit is linked to stock

How Capnix fits

  • Start with your free Capnix score. It reads turnover, GST discipline, banking health and credit history, the same signals a working capital lender reads.
  • Capnix shares your file only with lenders on our panel, and only after you give consent. You can withdraw that consent in your Capnix account.
  • If a lender declines, the Capnix team takes your file to other suitable lenders on the panel instead of handing back a report.

Why Capnix

More than a loan. A team that gets you there

A loan matched to your cash cycle

We read how money moves through your business, then approach lenders whose working capital terms fit your turnover and your season.

One file, more than one lender

You share your details once. We take your profile to the lenders most likely to back it, and go back out if one declines.

Where this helps

  • Cover salaries, rent and utilities through slower months
  • Buy stock or raw material ahead of demand
  • Bridge the gap between paying suppliers and getting paid
  • Smooth out seasonal dips in cash flow

What happens after you start

We work out your Capnix score first, then work the lender applications with you until the money is disbursed.

See how it works

Loan products, rates, and eligibility are determined by the lenders on our panel. Capnix is not a lender and does not lend its own capital. We run your loan journey end to end.

Whether you are scaling up, smoothing cash flow, or buying new equipment, we take your file to the right lender and stay with it through to disbursal.

It pays for the day-to-day running of a business: stock, salaries, rent, utilities and the gap between paying suppliers and collecting from customers. It is not meant for buying long-life assets such as machines.
The lender decides. A common starting point is the turnover method. For micro and small enterprise borrowers with limits up to ₹5,00,00,000, the limit is computed as at least 20% of projected annual turnover. On a projected turnover of ₹1,00,00,000 that is at least ₹20,00,000. Lenders also read your banking, GST filing and repayment strength.
Banks may not take collateral on loans up to ₹20,00,000 to micro and small enterprises sanctioned or renewed from 01-Apr-2026. Above that, a lender may ask for security over stock and receivables, or take a CGTMSE guarantee, which covers working capital in blocks of five years. Each lender sets its own policy.
A working capital term loan is paid out once and repaid in instalments. A cash credit limit is a sanctioned amount you draw and repay as cash moves, with interest only on what you draw. Cash credit limits are usually linked to your stock and receivables.
For loans up to ₹25,00,000 to micro and small enterprises, RBI's lending directions for banks say a credit decision should take no more than 14 working days. NBFCs set their own timelines, so ask the lender for the date in writing.
On floating-rate business loans to individuals and micro and small enterprises, most banks and larger NBFCs may not charge for early repayment on loans sanctioned or renewed from 01-Jan-2026. Fixed-rate loans are not covered by that rule, so check the Key Facts Statement before you sign.
Usually bank statements and GST returns for the last 6 to 12 months, income tax returns and financial statements for 1 to 3 years, business proof and KYC. A limit linked to stock may also need a stock statement.
No. The money comes from lenders on our lender panel, and they decide approval, limit and rate. Capnix gets your file ready, shares it with lenders on our panel only after you give consent, and runs the lender application. A lender may charge its own processing fee, and we add nothing on top of it.
The method behind it

Read your cash flow. Matched to the right lender

Working capital lives and dies by timing. We read how money actually moves through your business, then size the facility to the gap you need to bridge, not a number off a template.

From there we approach the working-capital and receivables lenders most likely to say yes for a business like yours. The terms fit your turnover and your season, and getting your loan costs you nothing.
