What a Udyam certificate is
A Udyam certificate is the proof that your business is registered as a micro, small or medium enterprise. Its formal name is the Udyam Registration Certificate, often shortened to URC. When people search for an "MSME certificate", this is the document they mean.
The certificate is an e-certificate. The Ministry of MSME issues it online the moment Udyam registration is complete, together with a permanent Udyam Registration Number (Udyam gazette notification). There is no paper version to collect and no fee to pay at any step (Udyam gazette notification).
Three facts about it matter more than any other:
- It is permanent. It never needs renewal (Udyam Registration portal).
- It is checkable. It carries a dynamic QR code that opens your enterprise's page on the government portal (Udyam Registration portal).
- It decides your category at a bank. For priority sector lending, banks follow the category recorded in the URC (RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector).
Capnix does not issue, download or print Udyam certificates. Everything on this page happens on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, or in DigiLocker.
What the Udyam certificate tells a reader
A lender, a buyer or a government office reads your certificate for a few specific things. This table lists what the certificate establishes, as the official sources describe it.
| What it establishes | Why a reader cares | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A permanent Udyam Registration Number | Identifies your business on the portal for good | Udyam gazette notification |
| Your category: micro, small or medium | Banks classify your loans by this category | RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector |
| Every activity you declared, manufacturing or service | One registration covers all activities, so a reader sees what you do | Udyam gazette notification |
| Your social category (SC, ST, woman owner), declared at registration | Disclosure is mandatory and it drives some procurement and guarantee benefits | Ministry of MSME FAQs |
| A dynamic QR code | Scanning it opens your live record on the portal | Udyam Registration portal |
The category on the certificate can change over time. If your investment or turnover grows past a limit, the portal re-classifies you, and a communication is sent to you about the change (Udyam gazette notification). The MSME classification page explains the limits and the timing.
How to get a Udyam certificate
You get the certificate by completing Udyam registration. There is no separate application for the certificate itself. The Udyam registration guide explains who can register and whose Aadhaar goes on the form.
In short:
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose "New Registration" (Udyam Registration portal).
- Complete the Aadhaar check, enter the business PAN and fill in the business details. No documents are uploaded.
- Submit. The portal issues your Udyam Registration Number and the certificate online (Udyam gazette notification).
If you hold an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) number, choose "UAM Migration to Udyam" instead (Udyam Registration portal). Old UAM registrations stopped being valid after 30-Jun-2022, so a UAM certificate on its own no longer works as proof (Udyam Registration portal). Udyam vs Udyog Aadhaar covers the move.
How to download or print your Udyam certificate
There are two free routes. Neither needs an agent.
Route 1: the official Udyam portal
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in.
- In the "Print/Verify" menu, choose "Print Udyam Certificate" (Udyam Registration portal).
- Enter your Udyam Registration Number and the details the portal asks for, and complete the check it sends.
- Save the certificate as a PDF, or print it.
If you cannot remember your number, use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" in the same menu first (Udyam Registration portal).
Route 2: DigiLocker
The Udyam portal and DigiLocker are linked, and your certificate is stored there in electronic form. In a letter dated 01-Jan-2025, the Office of the Development Commissioner (MSME) asked ministries, the Reserve Bank of India and state departments to accept the DigiLocker copy as equal to the physical certificate (Udyam Registration portal document). For many offices, sharing the DigiLocker copy is enough.
| Route | Use it for | What you need | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print Udyam Certificate on the portal | A PDF or printout for a bank file or tender | Your Udyam Registration Number | Udyam Registration portal |
| Forgot Udyam/UAM Number on the portal | Recovering a lost number | The details the portal asks for | Udyam Registration portal |
| DigiLocker | Sharing a copy that offices are asked to accept as the original | Your DigiLocker account | Udyam Registration portal document |
How to verify a Udyam certificate
Anyone can check whether a certificate is real. This matters when you are a buyer checking a supplier, or a lender checking a borrower.
- Scan the QR code. It opens the enterprise's page on the government portal (Udyam Registration portal).
- Use "Verify Udyam Registration". The portal's Print/Verify menu has this option for any number (Udyam Registration portal).
- For an old number, "Verify Udyog Aadhaar" checks a UAM number (Udyam Registration portal).
If the details on the portal do not match the paper you were given, trust the portal.
Is the Udyam certificate valid for life?
The registration does not expire and never needs renewal (Udyam Registration portal). But "valid for life" comes with three conditions.
- You must keep it updated. Every registered business must update its information online, including ITR and GST return details for the previous financial year. If you miss the update window the portal sets, your status can be suspended (Udyam gazette notification).
- Your category can change. If you grow past a limit, you keep your current status until one year after the close of the year of registration (Udyam gazette notification). If you shrink, you move down only when you fall below both limits, and the new status starts on 1 April of the next financial year (Udyam gazette notification).
- It can be cancelled after a complaint. The District Industries Centre (DIC) investigates a discrepancy, and the state may amend the details or recommend cancellation (Udyam gazette notification). The Ministry has authorised its regional offices to act on such requests within 48 hours (Udyam Registration portal document).
The fees and updates page explains how to change your address, name or activity.
Where the Udyam certificate is used
Most people first need the certificate because a lender or a buyer asks for it. Here is where it changes something, with the condition attached.
| Where | What the certificate does | Condition | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank loans | Sets your category for priority sector lending | The bank follows the URC | RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector |
| One bank's fee schedule (Kotak Mahindra Bank) | Nil processing fee on a total facility up to ₹5,00,000 | For micro and small enterprises that submit the URC before disbursal (the release of loan money) | Kotak Mahindra Bank |
| PMEGP subsidy | New PMEGP units must register on Udyam | Before physical verification and margin-money adjustment | PMEGP portal |
| Micro Credit Card | Cards up to ₹5,00,000 with CGTMSE cover | Only for Udyam-registered micro enterprises | CGTMSE circular 259 |
| Government tenders | Free tender sets and no earnest money deposit | For micro and small enterprises registered on Udyam | Ministry of MSME FAQs |
| Delayed payment complaints | Lets you file on MSME Samadhaan | Any micro or small enterprise with a valid Udyam | MSME Samadhaan portal |
| Invoice discounting on TReDS | Only MSMEs can sell receivables there | The Udyam portal asks registered units to onboard | RBI FAQ on TReDS, Udyam Registration portal |
A certificate does not make a loan certain. Lenders still read your bank statements, returns and repayment history, and they decide. The benefits page goes deeper on each row.
Paid "certificate" websites: what to know
The official portal states plainly that it is the only official website, and it warns visitors to beware of fake sites (Udyam Registration portal). The registration notice adds that, apart from the government portal and its single window systems, no private system, agency or person is authorised to register a business or do any related activity (Udyam Registration portal).
That covers printing too. Printing, verifying and recovering a number are free options on the portal (Udyam Registration portal). If a website asks you to pay for a Udyam certificate, a "certificate download" or an "update", you are paying for something the government gives free (Udyam gazette notification). Check the address bar for udyamregistration.gov.in before you enter your Aadhaar anywhere.
Keep the certificate with your loan papers
When you prepare a loan file, keep the latest certificate PDF beside your PAN, GST registration and bank statements. Make sure the business name and address match across all of them. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons a file slows down, and the MSME loan documents checklist shows what else to gather. To see how a lender would read the rest of your file, take the free readiness check.
