Udyam udyog registration: Udyam vs Udyog Aadhaar, and how to migrate

Udyam udyog registration today means Udyam, which replaced Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) as India's MSME registration from 01-Jul-2020. UAM registrations stayed valid only up to 30-Jun-2022, so any business still holding a UAM number must move to Udyam. Migration is free on udyamregistration.gov.in through the "UAM Migration to Udyam" option, and the result is a permanent Udyam number.

Loan products, rates, and eligibility are determined by the lenders on our panel. Capnix is not a lender and does not lend its own capital. We run your loan journey end to end.

Udyam udyog registration in one line

Udyam is the current MSME registration, and Udyog Aadhaar is the one it replaced. When people search "udyam udyog", they usually hold an old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) number and want to know whether it still works. It does not: UAM validity was extended only up to 30-Jun-2022 (Udyam Registration portal). The fix is a free migration on the official Udyam portal (Udyam Registration portal, Udyam gazette notification).

How the switch happened

The Ministry of MSME notified Udyam registration with effect from 01-Jul-2020. The notification said every enterprise registered under the older systems, Entrepreneurs Memorandum Part II (EM-II) or UAM, must register again on the Udyam portal (Udyam gazette notification). Old registrations were first allowed to stay valid until 31-Mar-2021 (Udyam gazette notification), and a later circular stretched UAM validity to 30-Jun-2022 (Udyam Registration portal). The portal still states the rule plainly: holders of EM-II or UAM "will have to re-register themselves" (Udyam Registration portal).

The last two rows are the ones that cost money if ignored. A bank classifies your loans by the Udyam certificate, not by an old UAM number (RBI Master Direction, lending to MSME sector). For government tenders, the procurement rules now look for Udyam (Ministry of MSME FAQs).

Why Udyam is different, not just renamed

Three changes make Udyam more than a new name:

  1. Government data, not just your word. Udyam reads investment and turnover from your PAN and GST records and is linked to the income tax and GST systems (Udyam Registration portal). Your category follows what you filed.
  2. One business, one registration. You cannot hold several registrations for one enterprise. Activities are added to the one you have (Udyam gazette notification).
  3. A checkable certificate. The Udyam certificate carries a dynamic QR code that opens your record on the portal (Udyam Registration portal). Anyone can confirm it in seconds.

How to migrate from Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam

Capnix does not file registrations. Migration happens on the government portal, free, by you (Udyam gazette notification).

  1. Open udyamregistration.gov.in.
  2. Choose "UAM Migration to Udyam". If your UAM was filed for you through assisted filing, choose "Assisted UAM Migration" instead (Udyam Registration portal).
  3. Enter your UAM number and complete the checks the portal asks for.
  4. Enter the business PAN and, where GST applies, confirm the GSTIN. Both have been required since 01-Apr-2021 (Udyam Registration portal).
  5. Check the details carried over from UAM, correct anything out of date, and submit.
  6. Your Udyam Registration Number and certificate are issued online (Udyam gazette notification).

If you have forgotten your UAM number, use "Forgot Udyam/UAM Number" first. If you only need proof of what your old UAM said, "Print UAM Certificate" and "Print UAM Application" are still on the portal menu (Udyam Registration portal). Neither replaces migration.

Common problems when you migrate

Problem What usually causes it What to do Source
Name on UAM differs from the PAN UAM was self-declared; Udyam checks PAN data Use the name as it appears on the PAN; update your GST and bank records to match Udyam Registration portal
Two UAM numbers for one business Duplicates were sometimes filed under the older system Migrate one. Udyam allows only one registration per enterprise Udyam gazette notification
No GSTIN GST registration is not needed for every business GSTIN is required only where the GST law applies Udyam Registration portal
Stuck at the Aadhaar step Aadhaar not linked to a working mobile number Ask your District Industries Centre for help Udyam gazette notification

Some private sites offer "UAM to Udyam conversion" for a fee. The portal is the only official channel, and no private agency is authorised to register businesses or do related work (Udyam Registration portal). Migration costs nothing on the portal (Udyam gazette notification).

Once you are on Udyam, keep your details current each year and print a fresh certificate before any loan application. The Udyam registration guide explains the basics, the Udyam certificate page covers printing and verifying, and the free readiness check shows how a lender reads the rest of your file.
