MSME registration documents: what Udyam actually needs from you

There are no MSME registration documents to upload. Udyam registration is paperless and self-declared: you need an Aadhaar number, the business PAN, and a GSTIN only where the GST law requires one. Investment and turnover are read from your PAN and GST records. Keep a few details ready so the form matches your other records.

Loan products, rates, and eligibility are determined by the lenders on our panel. Capnix is not a lender and does not lend its own capital. We run your loan journey end to end.

MSME registration documents: the short list

Udyam registration needs no documents to be uploaded. The official portal says the process is "fully online, paperless and based on self-declaration", that "No documents or proof are required to be uploaded", and that "Only Adhaar Number will be enough for registration" (Udyam Registration portal). It adds that PAN and GST-linked details of investment and turnover "will be taken automatically from Government data bases" (Udyam Registration portal).

So the honest list of MSME registration documents is short:

You need Why Source
An Aadhaar number of the right person Aadhaar is required for Udyam registration Udyam Registration portal, Udyam gazette notification
The business PAN Required since 01-Apr-2021; an unregistered proprietorship may use the proprietor's PAN Udyam Registration portal, Udyam Registration portal document
The GSTIN (GST number), only if GST applies to you Required where the GST law applies; the GST law decides who is exempt Udyam Registration portal, Udyam Registration portal document

Nothing is scanned, attested or couriered. If a website asks you to upload papers and pay for "MSME registration", it is not the government portal, which is free (Udyam gazette notification, Udyam Registration portal).

Whose Aadhaar and PAN, by type of business

Business type Aadhaar of PAN to use Source

The Aadhaar should be linked to a mobile number you can reach while filling the form. If it is not, sort that out first, or ask for help (see below).

Details to keep beside you while you fill the form

Even without uploads, the form asks for business details that you type in yourself. Keep these ready so what you declare matches your GST, bank and tax records. The portal publishes a sample form if you want to see every field first.

What each detail proves, and to whom

The form is self-declared, so the real check happens elsewhere:

  • The portal checks your PAN and GST data against government databases (Udyam Registration portal).
  • A bank later reads your Udyam certificate beside your PAN, GST certificate and bank statements. If the business name or address differs between them, expect a query.
  • The law treats a false declaration seriously. Intentionally misrepresenting or hiding facts can attract the penalty in section 27 of the MSMED Act (Udyam gazette notification).

Treat the form the way you would treat a return: type what your records say, not what you hope.

If something is missing

Missing item What you can do Source
No Aadhaar yet Go to a District Industries Centre or a Champions Control Room with your Aadhaar enrolment slip, bank photo passbook, voter ID, passport or driving licence; they help you get Aadhaar and then register Udyam gazette notification
No GSTIN Not needed if the GST law does not require you to register Udyam Registration portal document
No separate business PAN (unregistered proprietorship) Use the proprietor's PAN Udyam Registration portal document
No ITR yet (new business) Investment is self-declared until the first ITR Udyam gazette notification
Several GSTINs under one PAN Register once; all GSTINs under the PAN count as one enterprise Udyam gazette notification

Udyam documents are not loan documents

Udyam registration needs almost nothing. A loan needs much more. Once you hold the Udyam certificate, a lender will usually also ask for KYC (identity checks) of the owners, financial statements, income tax returns, GST returns and twelve months of bank statements. Those are a different task with a different list:

The Udyam certificate goes into that file as one item. Keep its business name and address identical to your GST certificate and bank account, because a mismatch is a common reason a file slows down.

To see how ready the rest of your file is, take the free readiness check. For registration steps, see the Udyam registration guide, and for changes later, fees and updates.
